READING:
Read
to or with your child daily.
Ask
your child to retell a story. (Listen for the beginning,
middle and end).
Model
good reading habits. Let your child see you reading.
Take
your child to the library to check out books.
WRITING:
Read,
read, and then read some more.
Talk
about the books your child reads.
Talk
about interesting sentences in books and about ideas that excite
the reader’s interest.
Keep
pencils, pens and papers ready for your child to use.
Ask
your child to write letters to friends and relatives, make a
list of things to do, and write in journals.
If
you have a computer, save the writing in a special file for your
child.
MATH:
Ask
you child questions about his or her math work such as, “Can you
show me another way to solve this problem?” or “How did you
solve that problem?”
Let
your child see how important math is in everyday life as you
cook, shop, pay bills, etc.
SCIENCE:
Talk
about science with your child. Ask your child’s teacher for
activities that you can do at home.
Ask
your child to explain science homework.
Make
daily observations with your child about the weather. Chart the
amount of rain and daily temperatures. Compare data over time.
Take
walks and talk about the plants or animals you see. Encourage
questioning at all times.
Visit
a science museum, zoo, aquarium, recycling plant, farm or
planetarium. Help your child feel the excitement of observing
and discovering!
